Mornings can be difficult — especially when we need to get a lot of things done in a very short amount of time. For a long time, my mornings drained my energy before the day even started. Not because I was doing too much, but because I was completely unprepared. Everything shifted when I discovered the power of a simple night-before routine.
One day, I stumbled upon this phrase:
“The best preparation for good work tomorrow is to do good work today.” — Elbert Hubbard
And honestly? It unlocked something in me.
I realized that mornings aren’t something far away in the future — they’re simply a continuation of what we did (or didn’t do) the night before. Whether our mornings feel calm or chaotic is usually decided long before the alarm goes off.

If any of this sounds familiar — feeling overwhelmed the moment you wake up, staring at your kitchen wondering oatmeal, eggs, yogurt, granola… what should I eat? — or standing in front of your closet unsure if it’s a gym day, a work meeting day, or a “please don’t talk to me” day — then you’ve experienced decision fatigue. A very controversial term for someone who technically woke up rested (just kidding… kind of).
In this post, we’re tackling those morning struggles before they even happen. The goal is simple: prepare key things the night before so that when morning comes, everything is ready — easy, fast, and calm.
Here are 6 things I prepare the night before to start my mornings with the right energy.
1. Prepare Your Clothes, Shoes & Jewelry
Looking good does take a little effort — but once your outfit is ready, the next morning feels effortless.
When I started going back to the office, my outfits suffered. Poorly fitting clothes, wrinkly tops, dirty shoes, grabbing whatever hoodie was closest… all because I didn’t prepare the night before.
Now, I’ve turned outfit prep into entertainment instead of a chore. When I need inspiration, I open Pinterest and search for ideas that work with what I already own — a black blazer, baggy jeans, a navy top, anything.
Choosing my outfit intentionally helps me feel confident before the day even starts. I already know what to wear and how to style it — whether it’s for a work meeting or a tough gym session. I’m always wearing something that makes me feel good.
Even if you’re not into fashion or you wear a uniform, this still saves time and mental energy.
2. Get Your Breakfast Ready
I’m not a kitchen expert, but I am a fan of saving time.
Preparing breakfast ahead of time has been a game-changer. Overnight oats, yogurt parfaits, boiled eggs, quiche, mashed avocado — whatever fits your routine or diet.
One of my favorite tricks? Setting the rice cooker to make oatmeal a few minutes before I wake up. While I shower, breakfast is cooking. I just add fruit and go.
No thinking. No rushing.

3. Pack Your Bag (Gym, Work, or Life)
Morning rushes are not made for packing bags.
Create a simple mental or written list for each scenario — gym, yoga, office, errands. Then prepare the bag the night before.
For example, when I have a 7 a.m. hot yoga class, my mat, water bottle, towels, headbands, and even a banana are ready and waiting. I wake up, get dressed, eat, brush my teeth, grab the bag, and leave.
The same applies to workdays: laptop, badge, makeup, lunch reminder, shopping bags — all prepared ahead of time.
4. Set Up Your Skincare & Makeup
If you enjoy skincare or rotate products, make them visible and accessible.
I keep everything I’ll use in a cute basket: face cream, micellar water, perfume, lipstick, mascara, serums, contact lenses — all in one place.
I usually stick to the same routine or makeup tones for a week, which makes mornings faster and easier. I don’t wear heavy makeup, but I like feeling presentable when I need to.
5. Create a Home for Your Essentials
Keys. Wallet. Cards. Sunglasses. Charger. Work badge.
I used to run around the house looking for these every morning — jackets, bags, random surfaces.
Now, I have a dedicated basket (or drawer) where everything always goes. It’s my default landing zone.
Before bed, I do a quick check: keys, wallet, cards, charger. I also check the weather so I know whether to grab an umbrella or sunglasses.
No thinking. No panic.
6. Review Your Calendar & Set the Tone for Tomorrow
Before going to bed, I quickly review my calendar.
Do I have meetings? Do I need to dress up? Wake up earlier? Confirm a class or reservation? Check in with a friend about plans?
Anything I can decide in advance, I do.
I also dump random thoughts into a to-do list or journal — things like booking a haircut or making an appointment. They’re out of my head and waiting for me when I have time.
Extra Tip: Night Showers Save Time
On days when I need to move faster in the morning, I wash my hair at night. A few extra minutes in the evening means I skip an entire step the next day.
Final Thoughts
These small night-before habits have completely changed how my mornings feel — calmer, more intentional, and less draining. Your routine doesn’t need to look like mine. Add or remove whatever fits your life. The goal is to support your future self. If this post helped you see your mornings differently, I’d love to know: What’s one thing you always prepare the night before that helps you the most?
